ARTISTS STATEMENT – JEAN COLE
Jean Cole likes to celebrate the unusual. The latest series enters the Am Dram world of the traditional Pantomime.
Men play women, women play men, the villain is very very bad and the princess is very very good and children dance and sing. The audience are expected to boo and shout. This is the world of pantomime, where bank managers, call centre operators, etc, leave their everyday self at the door and take on the overdramatized mantle of fictional characters.
The finished paintings are sourced from material gained while visiting the actors back stage. This interaction is recorded photographically which is then re-imagined back in the studio as portraits painted in oil. In doing this she is interested in capturing something of their personalities through the expressiveness of their faces. What makes them choose these role? Are they figures of fun or are there deeper elements at play? The viewer can decide.
